Review: High Flyers- Roulettes

When you read this book, you’ll find yourself looking to the sky, hoping to see Roulettes!

The author's personal connection to the topic shines throughout High Flyers: Roulettes. Sue shares intriguing facts, fascinating details and plenty of glimpses into her passion for these incredible aircraft and the people who fly them. It is the kind of book that makes you curious, invites questions and has you wanting to know more.

At home, I can almost guarantee you’ll be saying, “Did you know?” as you read!

There will be plenty of opportunities to pore over the photographs, chat about what you notice and imagine what it would be like to be a pilot. And I can definitely see the LEGO coming out as young readers build their own Roulettes-inspired model!

One of the bonuses of this book is that it invites readers to read, reread and revisit. The format, contents and index make it easy to dip back into a particular section when a question pops into your head, or you want to find a favourite fact.

And, of course, there is always the possibility of a little role-play. Who will be the pilot? Who is giving the instructions? Fasten your seatbelts!

In the classroom, there are SO many possibilities here!

Learners could create their own fact files about the Roulettes, building their understanding of technical language as they go. Each section of the book could become a springboard for a summary, accompanied by an illustration or labelled diagram.

I would definitely introduce a Stop and Jot strategy. Pause the reading and invite learners to jot a key word, record a fascinating fact or create a quick sketch. These little pauses encourage readers to notice, think and make meaning as they read.

I also love the Wing Tips feature. What a wonderful structure to borrow for factual writing! Learners could create their own tips to share interesting information with their audience.

And then there is mathematics!

The springboards are numerous. Time. Speed. Height. Distance. Measurement. There are opportunities to explore real-world numbers and ask questions that take mathematics beyond the page.

And because High Flyers: Roulettes is part of a series, the learning doesn't have to stop when you turn the final page. One book can lead to another question, another investigation and another opportunity to research.

A book that takes flight.

I now know so much more about the Roulettes, and I love the way this book has left me looking up and wondering what might be flying overhead!

So, find a copy, settle in with a young reader and get ready to look up, ask questions, discover fascinating facts and let the learning take flight.
