When Jake encounters the ghost of a young Roman, an unusual mission begins. Alongside friends Tilly and Rabbit, Jake must track down stolen treasure and outsmart the Nighthawks, a group of thieves determined to get what they want. What begins as a search for gold and silver soon uncovers secrets that connect the past with the present, raising the stakes for the young detectives.
Arena brings together historical adventure and supernatural mystery in a way that should appeal to young readers with an interest in ancient history, while the fast-moving plot provides plenty to keep the pages turning. Short chapters make the story accessible, and regular twists and discoveries ensure there is always another piece of the mystery to uncover.
The supernatural elements are particularly effective, giving the historical setting an intriguing sense of mystery without taking over the story. Alongside the action, the novel explores themes of friendship, family and loss, adding emotional depth to Jake and his friends’ adventure.
Hunk for the Nighthawks is an enjoyable choice for readers looking for an accessible historical adventure with a supernatural twist. Jake, Tilly and Rabbit make a likeable team, and the conclusion leaves plenty of potential for (hopefully) another adventure with the trio.
