Review: I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941

The I Survived series has a knack for bringing history to life through the experiences of young people, and I Survived: The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 is a strong example of how effectively this can work in graphic novel form.

Danny Crane has recently moved with his mother from New York City to Hawaii and is desperate to find a way back home. But his plans are quickly forgotten when Japanese fighter planes fill the skies over Pearl Harbor and Danny finds himself caught up in the attack.

As with the wider I Survived series, the story is told through the eyes of a child. This gives readers a personal perspective on an event that can otherwise feel distant when encountered through history books and dates. While the bombing of Pearl Harbor is undoubtedly an upsetting moment in history, the story approaches it in a way that is accessible to younger readers, allowing them to engage with the events without becoming overwhelmed by them.

Peter Wartman’s illustrations add energy and immediacy to Danny’s story. The visual storytelling works particularly well during the attack, while the use of sepia tones for flashbacks provides a clear visual distinction between past and present.

The graphic novel is also a useful learning resource beyond the narrative itself. Historical information at the end provides additional context about Pearl Harbor and encourages readers to explore the real events behind Danny’s fictional experience.

For young readers who enjoy action, adventure and survival stories, this is an engaging introduction to an important period of history. The combination of accessible storytelling, expressive illustrations and factual information makes it particularly well suited to readers who may be more reluctant to pick up a traditional historical text — proving once again that graphic novels can be a powerful way to connect young readers with the past.
